Summer Skincare Essentials

With summer in full swing, enjoying the outdoors is a given. However, with some of the strongest UV radiation globally, sun protection is critical to safeguard against skin damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. Here are the essentials for keeping you and your family protected this summer.

Why sun protection matters

We have some of the highest melanoma rates in the world, with non-melanoma skin cancers on the rise as well. Protecting yourself from UV exposure is the best defence against these risks. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV radiation can reach your skin, making daily sun protection a must.

Daily sun protection: Sunscreen Is Key

A good sunscreen is your first line of defence against UV damage:

  • Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30+ or higher. This protects against UVA and UVB rays, which cause sunburn and skin ageing.
  • Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside to allow it to bind to the skin.
  • Reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating, or physical activity.
  • Check the expiration date to ensure effectiveness, and store it according to the label.

If you’re unsure which sunscreen to choose, our pharmacy offers a range of sunscreens suitable for all skin types and family needs at competitive prices.

Beyond sunscreen: Comprehensive sun protection tips

While sunscreen is essential, additional sun-smart steps help maximise protection:

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and UV-protective sunglasses to shield your skin and eyes from harsh sunlight.
  • Follow your local weather app for daily UV levels and advice on sun protection, as UV radiation is strongest from September to April.
  • Limit sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm, especially for babies whose skin is extra sensitive.

Special care for young skin

Babies and young children have delicate skin, which is more susceptible to sun damage. Keep babies out of direct sunlight during peak hours, and dress them in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and sun hats.

Limit outdoor activities during peak hours

The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, plan outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon to reduce sun exposure during peak hours.

Educate Your Family

Teach your family, especially children, about the importance of sun protection. Encourage them to use sunscreen, wear hats, and stay in the shade.

Tips for storing and applying sunscreen effectively

To ensure your sunscreen remains effective and easy to apply:

  • Store sunscreen in a cool place as heat can affect its quality.
  • Avoid using sunscreen as a means to stay out in the sun longer. It reduces UV exposure but doesn’t eliminate it.
